Between October 5 and December 17, 1993, Amtrak was testing a German High Speed transit, the ICE, between New York and Washington, in revenue service. The train had actually been on a 6-month tour of the US, although powered much of the way by special diesel locomotives.  Here's a few photos that Fall of the ICE running north of Baltimore.

On December 15, I was fortunate to be able to ride the last northbound revenue run from Washington Union Station to New York PennStation. Here's a few photos from the trip. A special "Auf Weidersehen" cake was available and served to all passengers. 

First shots in DC, then enroute, then at Penn Station.
