Though I wasn't around to witness them, the Erie Limited excursions on NJT's Port Jervis Line are my favorite. I understand that the excursions were very popular, and a lot of people rode them. So tell me, what year did you ride the train, what car did you ride in, and how was your experience? Also, I know that they had cab visitations at Hoboken, so who did you meet in the cab? I don't know who was in the cab though, either Ross or Paul.

Question for Rich Melvin:
I watched a Mark 1 video that you narrated, that covered the 1996 excursions of the Erie Limited. At one point you said and I quote: "Today's run would feature an unusual double startup from the terminal, and a westbound run under cloudy skies." What does the term "double startup" mean, and what was the purpose of doing this?

Question for anyone that knows:

After watching the video, I saw that Paul Nichini seemed pretty young to be an engineer on a 4-8-4 running 79 mph with 26 passenger cars. Does anyone know how old he was at the time? Please let me know.

I rode three of the Erie Limited trips including the one during which the 614 broke down and had to be set off at Campbell Hall and the run had to be completed behind a pair of NJ Transit GP40s. Overall, I found my experience on these excursions very enjoyable. Regarding our location aboard the train, we purchased our tickets as soon as they went on sale so we were seated very close to the head end each time affording us to listen to the locomotive nicely even with the sealed windows of NJT's "Comet" cars. A number of the trips also operated with open window accommodations immediately behind the engine through which they rotated passengers so everyone had a fair chance to participate in the experience. Again, it was a very enjoyable day out on the railroad.
