Why did they go belly up. The CP on the old dm&e division sure likes the sd40-2. That is all they run. Did emd not do enough work with 4 cycle to compete with general electric.
GM's EMD didn't really go "belly up", GM chose to sell their EMD division to Greenbriar. I'm not sure if GM ever explained why, may be that they just got a real good offer they felt they couldn't turn down, or maybe they just wanted to get out of the railroad industry and concentrate on automobiles and trucks.
