I find it confusing that some of the halls at York close at different times. Why is this?

Member halls close a bit earlier to give those folks (sellers) an opportunity to visit the dealer halls.
Not true Allan. Most table holders in the other halls are collectors and don't care about the Orange or purple halls. They want to get out of there & have dinner.
Allan stated the offical reason.
As far as collecting goes: I've picked up plenty of items for my collection in the dealer halls.
CWBURFLE..You are telling me that after you have sat at your table all day, you then go over to the orange hall from 5-7? I don't think so.
Eddie:
I rarely get a table at York. When I do, it is with several friends, and we take turns watching the tables while the others go shopping.
So, no, I do not go to the dealer halls from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. I will have been there during the normal day.
Regardless, the official reason, which has been published, is to allow member tableholders to visit the dealer halls.
As far as I am concerned, the dealer halls should also close at 5:00 PM to allow those folks to go get some dinner and relax.
As I recall, when I first started attending the York show, it was held on Friday and Saturday only, and the offical Friday hours went until 9:00 PM, but few tableholders were there in the evening.
The first time I went, I didn't arrive until very late on Friday afternoon. Most of the tableholders had gone home for the day. But I did meet John Bradshaw, and purchased a whole bunch of AMT and KMT (not Kirs) freight cars from him.
Rather than whining about dealers leaving early, I resolved to be there at the opening in the future.
If you are in the business of trains and trying to make a living at it, I could see
dealers and manufacturers who have trudged all their stock some long distance, hauling it into the hall, wanting to extend those extra hours of market exposure to potential customers, before having to tear everything down after a "moment". While the number might not be great, some working stiffs in the driving area may have only those late hours in which they can race to the fairgrounds after work. As a shopper who has started in the dealer hall, and then circled the grounds, noting the prices of what I am looking for, and not finding better ones, I will come back to dealer halls. They are usually the last halls I visit in the evening.
I have found you can either shop(or sight-see) or set up..so I haven't set up lately...
I'm not twins or triplets.
I sell at york and stay at my table all day ( I want to sell ). When members hall close I go to the dealer halls. Not all of us are collectors. Before I retired I could only get there for saturday unless I was fortunate to get friday off, in the trucking business thats hard to do. Back then I spent a lot of money at York. If you want to sell~ stay open for business. I drive from Michigan to get there.
The member hall open hours are generally okay for all three days. The dealer hall open hours for Thursday are okay and they suck big time for Friday when the entire place--member and deal halls alike--should close up at 5:30. Just my considered opinion.

Dang it CW (and Allan) , if Eddie says that the way it is, then how dare you doubt it
Personally I like the chance to go back to the dealer halls at the end of the day after the member halls close for one last look. Besides on Friday I get free Ice Cream and a York mint

Yes, it is pretty well known that Eddie G. is the #1 proponent of the York Meet no matter what the situation or circumstances. Heck, if the meet starting charging for parking, Eddie would find a reason to support that move.
On second thought, maybe I shouldn't have provided that example. It might give the Eastern Div. honchos some ideas!
I'm with Eddie on this. I think you're all full of Malarkey!
Not Lebanon Bologna?
When I went last year, it was kinda nice to hit the member halls first and then when they closed or were about to, work my way over to the orange hall.

Not a bad plan at all depending on where your interests lie and what you may be looking for. Generally speaking, product available in the Orange Hall or another dealer hall is often enough also available elsewhere (local hobby shop, online, etc.), so missing out on something is often no big deal. That's less true with items often found in the member halls.

I did that a few times, first thing Friday, and was put-off by the number of tables covered up well after 9am.

There are so many tables, and so many trains available at the show. I never worry about what might be on a covered table. I just move on to the next one.
As a table holder with a group of other table holders, we generally take our turns at the tables and wander around. Then after it closes at 530, we head over to orange together. I wish the dealers stayed open until 10, haha. Just can't get enough York. This is great to give the table holders more time in dealers halls but also to break up the exit from the fairgrounds. A lot of folks to take off at 530 and its jammed getting out at 7.
