I was struggling to install a new traction tire on an articulated steam locomotive. It was the front driver and there was a ton of drive gear over the wheel in addition to a brake shoe to the side. I asked my wife to help because I felt as if I could benefit from more hands. She told me to let her try it by herself and if she couldn't do it, we would work together. Well, it wasn't that long before she was done--the tire was on the wheel! I think she should go into train repair.

Anybody else have a wife who is so helpful with the trains (and I don't mean just with scenery)?

Cheers!

Keith

Wellllll......

If I dared suggest that it is a common perception throughout many industries that female dexterity is measurably better than that of the male particularly for the handling and assembly of small, delicate components,

......would it precipitate the usual tour of the manure spreader through this thread?

Yes, probably.

I'm sorry.

BTW, my wife has provided the same sort of assistance in doing things for which my attempts have been properly labeled "Klutz".    Besides, this is her hobby, too.  Who am I to create stereotypical domains?

Peace.

I'm not that great with tiny things (big, arthritic hands) but the comment about most women having smaller hands and thinner fingers is spot on. Most of us are used to using our nails as tiny pry bars and screwdrivers, even if we shouldn't. In addition, a house with more than one craft often has tools that can be handy. The guys are polite about my stash of jewelry tools, and I'm polite about the train ones, but if I need a bigger wire cutter or they need the tiny chain-nose pliers, we're good.

Never underestimate the value of someone looking at a task from a different perspective, either. Oh, the face palm effect when you've been struggling awhile, they glance at it and say "Is there any reason you can't..." and you realize the big obvious thing you missed...
