I decided to get wifi for the under the tree layout. I plan on using one of my pre L TIU's for this. The TIU and remote are being upgraded to 5.0. I just read that I'll need a special cable for this older TIU. Which connection on the TIU is used with the wifi unit? Is there a radio shack number for this cable? I talked to Barry at York, but plan on waiting for his new book. I'm flying blind on this wifi stuff for now.

I don't do uploads myself, but I hear about some of the fun and the cables involved. Anyway, my question here is will a $9.99 cable be sufficient for the wifi application?

I've been using the Sabrent USB to DB9 serial cable for my pre Rev.L. TIU upgrades.

$9.99

No issues.  It should work fine with your Wifi.

I plan on using it when my new wifi unit gets here Monday.

Do be aware that these cables usually come with a disk, containg drivers that must be loaded onto your computer--easy job.

Mine came with no disk.  There's racks of these things, new in box,  at my local electronics store with no disks.    Windows 7 recognized it, and  all was well.  I guess it depends on OS.    I use a Macbook Pro, and made a small partition to run windows for DCS stuff.

Several folks here have reported needing the Windows Drivers for USB for the DCS loader program (avaialble from the MTH DCS website) to work properly. I don't recall if this applies to the wifi unit or not? I haven't needed them so far, but I was using Windows 7 until recently and have not yet tried anything DCS with Windows 10. Just something to be aware of if you are using Windows 10 and have any problems.
