I have a complete ps1 electrical set up--will the sound work if I install it in a tender with a roller pick-up
and not using the engine yellow wires
I would like to install it in a pre-war steam loco tender

Generally speaking, if the yellow wire only brings constant track power to the board in the tender, then the hookup you suggest will work. If the yellow wire brings any kind of a signal from any locomotive electronics, say a trigger signal, then the system may not work, or may not work properly. You need to know what the yellow wire carries to the tender; track voltage, or a trigger signal. Also, be sure the tender board does in fact use track voltage, and not a lower voltage brought to it through that yellow wire from the locomotive electronics. Measure the voltage on the yellow wire to be sure.
