I'm planning at some point to pick up a set of passenger cars to have an alternative to my freight train.

My layout is a mix of FasTrack in O-48 and O-36 sizes.  Most of the passenger sets (whether Madison or Streamliner) from MTH say they will run on O-42.  However, the next size down that MTH makes is O-31 and I suspect they wouldn't opt to rate their trains for a track size they don't make.

So, I'm asking those of you who have these sets, do they run well on O-36 FasTrack, or is it strictly O-42 and up?  My outer loop is 100% O-48 or higher, but it would add more interest if they could go anywhere on the layout.

Also, MTH did apparently make some older passenger sets that are advertised to run on O-31 too, but they're less common and come in fewer varieties than the ones rated O-42.

I realize there are of course multiple passenger sets over the years, I'm mainly hoping to collect example numbers of ones that do and don't work that I can then use as a reference in my shopping and I assume that if one passenger set works the rest of the ones from that year/series will work too.

Thanks!

A 14 to 15 inch passenger car might make it through the 036 fastrac curves, but not anything much larger like 18 or 21 inch Atlas passenger cars. Another thing that I have found to be true from experiance with larger passenger cars, you may need a larger engine to run with them because of derailments, coupler to coupler end-play has to be considered. Example is a 21 inch passenger car will not make it through the 042 curves with a GP-30, makes through 042 curves with an SD-40 without derailments.

I don't have any MTH passenger cars, but I have a set of WBB 18" passenger cars that are rated for O-42 curves. Although I don't make a habit of running them on O-36, on the occasions when I have run them on O-36 they performed beautifully, being either pushed or pulled through the curves without incident.

Sometimes its not the curves that cause problems. Obstacles like switch motors get in the way. For example if I run my MTH Premier AC4400 diesel (O42 recommended curves) on O31 Lionel tubular curves, it seems to run fine until I cross over an O31 switch (Lionel model O22). Midway though the switch the AC4400's fuel tank hits the switch motor. The switch motor could be swapped from the inside of the switch to the outside to fix this problem.
