New York Central NS Heritage LEGACY Scale SD70ACe Diesel #1066 SKU: 6-42527.

I have ordered the above and then realized this may not run on my Gilbert tinplate track? I have been searching for awhile and have not come up with an answer.

If it can't with the current wheel set would it be possible to convert?

Thanks in advance,

Mike

Mike,

I think your new SD70 will run fine on your AF tubular track.  Mine runs on my track pretty well.  The old flyer track that I have doesn't give me any issues, but some of the switches can be a problem if  the frog is worn.

Throw your switches in both directions and check the height of the frog rail.  If they are level with the fixed rails on the switch you will be ok, if the frogs are worn, and are lower than the fixed rails you might have issues.

Good luck, and let us know how it works out.

Carl on his site has a fix for this problem going over switches on Af hi rail switches. I have came up with a simple fix that works to allow the rear wheel set to have more downward travel ( freedom to move). Simply loosen the screws on the truck frame and add a shim.  I use a piece of business card. It slides in between the gearbox and bottom plate at the rear wheel set. Works every time. Only at the end of plate. About 1/8 inch by width of plate

My 44AC N&W runs great on gilbert track and travel thru the gilbert switches without any problems....my only problem is that the rubber tires get smoke fluid on them and then expand and fly off. Be very careful putting smoke fluid in....if you have smoke......by the way how do we get rubber tires when Father Lionel does have any????  Diesel or steam....................

I got the diesel today and put it through some testing. It runs great through the 9 switches and has no glitching at all! I tested the smoke and it works but I turned it back off as the directions state not to use it in conventional.

I only have a ZW with all the added protection so I really can't test much yet. I am looking at getting a CW-80 so I can at lest have the horn and bell until i can make the jump to Legacy control.

Thanks for the help with this purchase !

Mike,

Glad to hear your SD70 runs through all your switches nicely.

Aren't the ZW's 250 and 275 watts?  The CW80 is a great little transformer but is only rated at 80 Watts, and can only control 1 train.

I think you would be better off adding a couple of Lionel 5906 buttons, one for the bell, and one for the horn.
