I have a Cop & Hobo gondola by Bachmann.  I purchased two years ago but never ran it.  For those not familiar with this version it is scale length and gear driven, no motor.  It does work well however.  I was impressed with it's performance.

That said, I placed it on my Christmas layout that has all "O31" curves.  It kept pulling the following car off that track when it traversed the curves.  I am selling it and am going to use the MPC era version of the cop & hobo car that I just bought. New old stock.

I've listed it on Ebay with the disclaimer about the curves.  I wonder if anyone here has one of these and if so, do you have the same issue I described.

Williams by Bachmann had a cop and robber chase gondola. I couldn’t find any reference to a Bachmann cop and hobo car like Lionel had.

In all likelihood, you were derailing your train because you put cars that were too light in front of that car, which had more “drag” due to the axle gear used for the animation. That, or, if the other cars in the train were pretty heavy, the gearing on the gondola needed some lubrication to reduce the friction.

If you were keeping it, I would have suggested trying to move the gondola elsewhere in the train or lubricating the gear.

Here's the link to the gondola in question;

The lighter cars a were placed behind the gondola.  There is almost no drag because of the gear driven action.  The car rolls very freely.  The gear was factory lubricated and the car is essentially new.  The cars behind the gondola were the small operating horse car ( the one with the horses heads bobbing in and out of the car sides and a post was N5c Pennsy caboose.

Bachmann's description indicates that it will negotiate O31 curves.  My opinion, however, is that it's scale length fights that promise.  I was looking at it last night and the trucks don't seem to have enough swing, side to side.

Yep. That’s the cop/robber car I was thinking of.

You may be right, Dan. If you considered the weight distribution and you’re certain that the gear wasn’t creating much drag, the tight curves might be a factor.

The length of the car isn’t really a problem, in this case.

Anyway, you did the right thing in noting the apparent limitation in your eBay listing. It might limit sales to buyers using larger curves, but that’s OK. I bet the car will be fine even on O-36 FasTrack.

And maybe someone will confirm the problem. I wish I had the car to give it a try.
