Does anyone know if Williams bought the rights for these from Lionel or what the story is behind Williams getting the ability to manufacture these?  I am curious why Lionel let these go?  I just bought the K-line Southern log dump car manufactured by Lionel the other day.  I will be getting the Williams Southern boxcar to go along with my log car.  The MSRP from Williams is nearly double compared to when Lionel was manufacturing them which I find interesting.  Many dealers are still trying to get rid of their K-line remotes at blow out prices.

As far as I know on the Williams operating cars, you will have to upgrade them to DCS or TMCC to operate them in command control. They will only respond to the Bachmann/Williams or Williams remote control unit, other then the remote uncoupling tracks. The old K-Line remote has about a 50% chance if any of operating the new Williams operating cars.

To operate these cars, I think the power must be on to the track they are on and the Williams remote is operated. Not sure how the operating car gets power from the track, as I don't have one to use. Maybe the Bachmann/Williams forum will give some advice on this.

My opinion is that they are nice cars to get, but would cost too much to upgrade to command control to make them feasible for use with command control.

I purchased the Williams operating box car.  I have several K-line operating cars that operate off the remote.

I hoped the K-line remote I have would operate the Williams car. It does not. I am not sure, maybe the box car has a problem. I do not have an operating track to check it.

The log cars and dump cars have a "reset button" so they are easy to test by pushing it. I am not seeing one on the box car.

Is anyone sure if the frequencys for the Willams remote are identical to the K-Line?

I was hoping that the K-line remote would work too.  I don't have mine yet so I don't know.  From what I understood from another thread that it would.  Pat mentions above that the Williams remote works with the K-line cars.  I would think that K-line remote would also work with Williams cars but from what you said it may not.

It is good to find out that your boxcar is working correctly.  I just did a further search on the forum and found a thread back in April of this year about the Williams and K-line remotes.  I wish I came across this earlier.  Looks like I will be buying a Williams remote too, but the question remains if it will really operate with my K-line operating log car.  Here is the post from April...

"They may look alike, but while at York Jack from WBB (and BucksCo of this forum) said that the new WBB remote runs on a different frequency than the original K-Line remote system.  I can't recall if the new WBB remote's selectable frequencies include those from the K-Line radio spectrum or not.  Meaning that the WBB might include the K-Line frequencies, but the K-Line remote can't access all the WBB frequencies."

Jeff: Lionel only had the rights to produce from the old K-Line dies for a fixed time period..... they had to give up their usage when the contract expired.  Since then K-Line's old product like is spread out with some being done by WBB, some by Ready Made Trains.  Maybe Lionel did buy the rights to one or two locos... someone else may know this. I bought a group of broken K-line cars awhile back on the cheap. Most were easily fixed. A few had broken die cast pieces. I'll try and see if I can just swap out the receivers from the K-line to the Willams cars to get it working for now.

The Williams operating cars are extremely nice for $89.00. Eventually I'll buy a Williams control.

I thought I would post what I have learned about the Williams and K-line Remotes since I now own both of them.  Hopefully this will help someone else.

I received my new Williams operating Box car last week along with a K-line remote and a K-Line Southern operating log car.  Since I placed my order before this thread was posted, I was hoping that the K-line remote would work with the Williams Box Car.  As Jeff said above, the K-line remotes does not work with the Williams Box Car.  So last weekend I went ahead and purchased the Williams Remote and I also decided to get a K-line Operating Milk Car along with it.  I received the Williams Remote a couple days ago and found out it does not work with the K-line operating cars

I know someone stated above that the Williams Remote will work with K-line cars but as it says on the packaging for Williams Remote..."For Williams by Bachmann Operating Cars Only."  The Williams remote looks the same as the K-line remote, but as I have learned the Williams remote works on different frequencies than the K-line remote.   I was little disappointed about needing 2 remotes, but the Williams and K-line operating cars work great.  I was impressed with Williams operating box car as shown in the pictures below.
