Picked up a nice Rio Grande PA AA set with one powered and one dummy from Williams by Bachmann. Upon inspection it worked nice, and had a realistic sound set to my surprise. Opened it up and found something called a MASSUSE and another little board hooked up to it with a speaker - all of which don't seem to be factory original. I know nothing about Williams by Bachmann boards.

It sounds good. Very basic. Price mover, Bell, and Whistle - like the early days of sound equipped trains, but nice. Oddly though the Bell button controls the whistle, and the Whistle controls the bell - at least that's what my TPC is doing. I saw that a black lead was connected to a red lead and vice-versa so I'm thinking this is why. Usually you get a swapped response if you track is wired backwards. Not a big deal though. (See picture - There are also two molex Connectors just detached doing nothing. Any ideas?)

*It also has a multi-chime horn like Lionel Railsounds II-4.0 had. Very nice. But doesn't have station sounds, crew talk, or brakes or any of that, so I know it isn't Proto-1 sounds or anything like that. Sounds are great just no idea what brand.

I'm hoping to add smokers to these guys so I may have to move the boards around.

I guess what I'm wondering is, what is a MASSUSE board and what sound board do you think is in here? Is it original or custom?

The directions that came with it mention nothing about prime mover or such realistic sounds.

Gotta hand it to Jerry Williams as I think he was the first of the bunch to actually deliver a decent model of the beautiful Alco PA. Lionel had announced its model in the same scheme but it was a long time before they hit the rails for us. R.O.W. announced theirs (which were very nice scale models made of brass by Ajin in Korea) but were delayed for awhile. Mike Wolfe had produced the D&RG's for Lionel and they were made by Samhongsa in Korea.

The Williams units are nice looking overall with great schemes but the trucks are too short and they sit awfully high on the rails giving rise to the 'high-water' comments that followed. For most operators at the time, they were wonderful!

Here's my early 'pre-Bachman' set of the handsome NP.
