At the Children's Museum we have worn out the rollers on some of the engines and so far been unable to obtain replacements.  The Williams rollers are smaller in diameter that Lionel rollers.  I don't think it would be a problem but is there any reason the Lionel rollers cannot be used?

Thanks

Because they were easier to get, I used "Lionel" pickup roller/rivets on the Williams GP-9's we used on the South Hills display layout when they wore out. I got them from both Olsen's Toy Trains and The Train Tender.

I don't remember the part numbers off the top of my head, and my notes are packed in a box out in the garage. Give me a day or two to rummage around and I'll dig them up.

According to my notes I used both the 681-15 Roller and 681-16 pin, and the 2035-140 roller with 2033-44 pin on our GP-9's. Some were original Williams, some WBB, but I don't believe there was a difference as far as using the Lionel style rollers.

Olsen's PN for a pack of two each 681-15/681-16 is: 2321PU

For two each 2035-140/2033-44 it's: 2046PU

You used to be able to get replacement rollers from Bachman. I adapted rollers and pickup arms from post war verticle motor f3 's. You will have to change the red wire hookup a bit as they are not both the same hookup. You also have to grind clearance in the bottom of the trucks as the Lionel rollers are twice as thick and will short out against the Williams trucks. Charlie Phillips can supply Williams rollers.

Steve,

That's the complete PU arm/roller assembly, which involves opening the loco and removing screws that aren't all that easy to get at to replace.

The rollers & pins I mentioned can be replaced by just flipping the loco over, removing the worn out roller, installing the new one, and setting the pin. No need to open the loco at all.

And on the South Hills display layout, we found the substitute rollers took longer to wear out than the original WBB rollers.
