Went to the Rocky Mountain Train Show Last weekend March 3-4

Picked up a Williams, Santa Fe Passenger Car Set, 4 Cars.  ( Item No. 43264 )  $120 Bucks.   Nice shape.  No scratches or marks.   Original large cardboard box with the individual boxes for each car.  1394 + 1497 coaches, 9750 Dome Car, 4960 Observation Car.      See pictures below.

The cars don't like my O-31 tubular track.  At first they would de-rail after only running a few feet.  I kept messing with them.  Running one car at a time behind an Engine.  After a while they seem to run a little better.  I have been trying to run the full  4 car set, but something on the trucks or the pick-ups for the lamps makes the cars short out after running only part way around my layout  ( 10- 20 feet )   There seems to be some slop in the wheel sets on the trucks.  They slide side to side too much.

I can run everything that I have in my car roster and don't have this problem.  I have a Lionel ( made in China ) 3 car Pullman Set,   ( Indian River, Pleasant View and George W Pullman ) that I picked up a year ago and they run great.  They have pick-ups for the car lamps too.  The wheel sets on the trucks for these cars are much tighter on them.  Do not have the slop the Williams Cars have.

Anybody have a similar experience.  Do these cars need a break in period ?  Am I doing something wrong ?  Anything I can do to the trucks to tighten them up ?   I'm I correct that these Cars are designed for O-27 track ?  ( says operates on all O Gauge Track on the Box )  Should they not run well on O-31

I finally got time to look at my Santa Fe Cars.  The uncouple plate on the bottom of some the trucks were miss aligned.  They were not setting flush with the bottom of the truck and they would not uncouple.   That must be what was causing the shorting out.      See photo below.  Note uncouple plate on the left is not setting flat.

Disassemble the truck and put it back together.

The uncouple works properly after putting truck back together.

Super Chief on my layout.
