The area where the speaker is ,is so small it doesn't need a baffle it'll act as it own baffle.
I just went out and took the board I removed from my E-7when I converted to TMCC and heres what I found. The board can't lay flat it's to wide it does look like it will fit vertically  but you'd have to remove the beep e unit and use the williams one.

There's more room under that shell than it looks like. MY beep has TMCC and sound ,electro- couplers on each end. and 12 LED's for lights- 2 for each head light 2 at each end for class light and 2 on each end for number boards.

It's a blast to play with cutting cars in and out.
This is it before the conversion

Thanks all so much for the info.  I'll weigh my options for installing.

Are there any other (fairly inexpensive) alternatives to get sound in a Beep?  I was going to purchase Electric RR Sound Commander 2 but was told it was no longer available.  And I didn't want to spend the money for full Railsounds.   It would be great to get engine sounds and all but a horn and bell would do.

Well here we go. You got 3 choices 2 of them are going to be pricey . Those are the ones from ERR and Dallee. AND THEN You have the MRC AC sounder . It's a sound board that runs off track power. You get diesel sounds several horns and a bell Price? 22 Bucks BUT and here's the BUT it's more or less a HO sound board and doesn't have the volume it needs for O scale.
I bought a couple of them and I did everything I know of Including different speakers ,different baffles and it's just plain not loud enough.
If you have a MTH or Lionel engine running at the same time you'll be thoroughly disappointed the track noise is enough to drown out the sound.

  So there you go.

David

Regarding the MRC Sounder, at this point the only other thing running on my layout at the same time would be a trolley.  So the Sounder may be OK for now.  But as I start expanding, maybe not.  I'll see if anything is up on YouTube.

Has anyone ever used the Lionel sounds boxcar?  Might that be another option?

Appreciate all the helpful info so far.  This is turning into a good learning experience

I'm curious as to what about this thread gave any hint that folks thought you offered sounds as a factory option?   I think 100% of the thread participants realize that we're talking about aftermarket solutions, no?

I would say that the MRC AC sounder w its small speaker would fit in any engine but as stated its not a powerful high volume unit. You can hear it but the sound must have a good path to the outside of the cab to rise above the running and room noise.

I have installed the MRC ac sounder in my Conrail beep. I used the OEM MRC speaker because of the space limitations. I cut out a speaker baffle from foam and glued to the top of the cab roof. The speaker and foam cannot be seen from the windows unless you really look up. IT sounds good for the $$ and ease of installation. I ran it on my christmas layout which has a raised 1/4 plywood pltform along with Atla sO track on Ross foam roadbed. I can hear the sounds and horn and it isn't as quiet as many think the sound unit is.
