anybody have an idea.
Joker,
When you say the sound cuts out, do you mean you lose all the sound in the tender,
of just the chuff.

If the misalignment is vertical, you can try bending the drawbar back to the correct position. It can get bent out of line from handling. If the problem is internal, it may have to go back to Lionel.
alex i lose the chuff, whistle, bell.
southwest, im thinking that what it is. i can move it up and down and get the sounds to come back, but when i let it go the sound goes out again. I was thinking all i had to was either bend it back or replace it. just wanted to make sure i wasnt missing anything

Okay, you're going to have to align the infrared senors up, by bending the draw bar with your hands. Like Southwest said above, if that doesn't work then most likely there's an internal issue.

the challenger also has a small wire under the draw bar that connects the speaker in the boiler. I had problems with mine and also lost some sounds. make sure it is plugged in properly and flex it and check it with a meter to see that that not broken.
I've had to repair several of the IR sensors that had broken wires under the covers. The alignment isn't that critical, if it's that touchy, I'd be looking for broken wires.
