Hey there, I have had a DCS system now for the past few years with a couple of PS3 locomotives, and recently decided to also integrate in TMCC (ebay had some good deals and I couldn't resist).

I picked up the following:

  • Cab-1 Remote (6-12868)
  • TMCC Base (6-12911)
  • TMCC PM-1 (6-24130)
  • MTH TMCC Adapter (50-1032)
  • PH-180

I did some basic testing (just making sure TMCC engine & equipment I bought worked) with TMCC Command Base wired to output post of TIU. I'm looking to integrate the PH180 and am wondering the best way to wire in TMCC permanently (and hopefully modular so I can drop-in a replacement legacy command base if I ever dive into that).

I have 3 different ways I could go about wiring up to work nicely with the TIU from what I've been researching over the past few days:

  • PH180 -> TIU (Molex Adapter) -> SERIAL to TMCC -> Command Base
  • PH180 -> Powermaster -> TIU
  • PH180 -> TIU, TMCC Command Base to TIU output

As far as track setup, I have a relatively small O-72 Loop w/ a few fastrack switches, and 3 PS3 engines (Mix of railking/premier), 1 TMCC-Odyssey engine.

One thing I would like to try and keep from TMCC is ability to serial control from a PC (JMRI/Decoder-Pro) (looking into layout automation for a development project).

Is there any big benefit to one off those 3 options over the other? I plan on adding TVS diodes (1.5KE36CA), if I ran to powermaster first it appears I would need a 22uH choke to keep DCS signal alive (unless that is only for the powermaster 360 variant), as well as possibly needing to buy a PSX-AC (which sounds like I should probably buy one anyway). Hoping to figure out what the best options were before I end up buying into multiple ways (which as I have a CB and TMCC Powermaster, I pretty much have already started).

If you run only command not need for the power master but it is nice to have. I would simply use the 180w PH to the PM (if so desired) then to the input of the TIU then I’d tie all common outputs together adding in the TMMC/Legacy signal. As far as anything for DCS I won’t pretend to know anything there are much more experienced people on here I have very little experience with DCS

Not sure what will be the best for you here, but FWIW, here's how my small 6'x16' layout is set up for both DCS and Legacy. It has worked very well since it was built in 2014. Most problems I've had so far have been 'operator' related.

I keep my DCS and Legacy as separate systems, Legacy/TMCC items are run with Legacy and MTH items are run with DCS. I do not have my Legacy base connected to my TIU using the serial cable. I have PH-180s going directly to my TIU inputs, then to MTH terminal blocks and on to the track blocks. Legacy is then connected to all the common outputs on my TIU. Layout was wired for DCS (per DCS Companion book).

My layout is command control only, never saw any need for a Powermaster? Don't know much about them either? So I have no idea how well these work with DCS, either before or after the TIU? If I ever have a conventional item to run, I'll use one of the TIU's variable channels.

PC control using JMRI has always sounded quite interesting me. I know JMRI has TMCC capabilities, but it seems to be geared much more toward the DCC systems, lots of stuff specifically for DCC. It also seemed a bit complicated for my small layout, and possibly not worth the effort? I've looked into enough to think it would probably be a lot of work to set up and get running. IMO, using the JMRI system with TMCC probably makes a whole lot more sense on much larger layouts with many switches, routes, signal controls, etc.

SIRCAPTAIN: Regarding using DCS and TMCC together, you may find value in the discussion on this thread that I started recently, which evolved into a very technical discussion of the range of wavelengths for each system, where and whether the use of chokes is helpful, etc etc.  It lead to a (so far) successful conclusion for my large layout.

Awesome thanks for the advice everyone! Looking like direct connection to TIU is the best way to start for now, with the DB-9 adapter cable going to TMCC for ease of setup (if layout gets bigger will probably need a proper terminal block for everything)

As far as JMRI I did some testing but it is really designed around DCC, will probably build something in python and learn how to do serial control over the USB->DB-9 cable to look into automating that singleTMCC engine. (PC control for DCS a ways off till I learn more about electrical to build that board from the DCS thread allowing control from phone cable connector)
