I'm trying to Wire a Z1000 switch machine to a Lionel O22c-1 controller. I'm obviously doing this wrong. Probably because the O22c-1 was supposed to be wired to a machine that was being powered by the track. If anybody has the correct schematic for me to use with this combination, it would be much appreciated. Photo attached. Red Large alligator is going to A terminal and Black large alligator going to U terminal.

Attached is the wiring diagram for a DZ 1000 with a DZ 1002 controller. Note the positive voltage goes to the switch machine and the transformer ground goes to the controller. Try switching your 2 alligator clips. Good luck. John

Yeah, agree. From the back of that transformer it looks like an RW. The U is positive, not common, on that transformer so you need to switch your clips.

I believe U is ground on all (at least postwar) Lionel transformers including the KW that trainmanmason is using. He currently has the U terminal connected to the switch machine instead of the controller.
Please read the 1954 or 1956 Lionel Operating Instruction guides that were furnished with sets in those years. Then, NOTE that for some transformers, the U terminal is connected to Lockon terminal #1, and that for other transformers, the U terminal is connected to Lockon terminal #2. Thus, U is NOT ground (more correctly, "common") for all postwar transformers.

Hi....Thanks everybody for your responses. I should have mentioned, I already got the Z1000 to work with the little push button controller as shown in the Ross instruction that jpnrc kindly attached. I did switch the gator clips from the transformer. If I run from A to Z1000 switch machine, the switch just flip flops back and forth rapidly. if I switch the gator clips with U going to Z1000, switch machine, nothing happens. Oh....and I also changed to a newer Lionel switch controller and the same thing happens as with the old controller in the picture.
The DZ1000 switch machine and the DZ1002 controller are designed to work as a pair and also support the non-derailing feature. Pair the Dz1000 and DZ1002 as shown in the instructions. Attach the 022c-1 controller wires to the same attachment points for the non-derailing feature as shown in the instruction. Make sure the common wire is the same wire used for the outside rails in both the 022c-1 and DZ setup. Activating the 022c-1 controller if properly wired will trigger with turnout by connecting the common wire, the same mechanism use to active the non-derailing feature.
There is going to be an issue with the lamps in the 022c-1 controller. I doubt the DZ switch machine/controller will support incandescent lamps. You might try the Town and Country LED replacement lamps which work on alternating current (AC). That should solve the LED polarity issue. Hopefully the Town and Country LEDs current requirements will be OK.
Here's another post on the application: https://ogrforum.com/...1-switch-controllers
Thank you @shorling. I look forward to trying your suggestion with LEDs. Also, thanks for the other link, too!
Here's the Z Stuff schematic for the DZ 1000 and DZ 1002,

Thank you for the schematic @shorling!! This is helpful.
