So I bought one of the new Lionel S-2 Turbines in the #671 Lionel Lines paint scheme and love it except that one day I noticed it has a very pronounced wobble going down the track. The first idea was a bulging traction tire or something like that. I finally got around to pulling the engine off and looking and don't really see any offending culprit. What I did notice was the screw that holds the front of the boiler to the frame was missing. That must be it I though, a trip to the hardware store provided a replacement screw and thought I fixed it. But alas, it is still wobbling and hunting as it goes down the track. Does anybody else have this problem with the S-2s? Any other suggestion as to what it might be?

With the weight of a steamer I've never had a "traction tire inducted wobble" that for me has been somewhat common in diesels until they are run or sit on a shelf on the flanges.
Traction tires tend to flat spot while the loco sits in the box on them.
The best way to check the tires is, if possible, run the loco at a crawl and put the rail at eye level. Watch the rear driver and see if there is a rise and fall from the top of the rail in relation to the tire.
Sounds like the driver wheels may be out of quarter. Although remote, it is possible that one of the axles is bent.

Tim: most likely this isn't something you'll be able to fix yourself. My suggestion would be to make a video (best quality that you can) which clearly depicts the problem. Post a link to it here on the forum, and see what other Turbine owners have to say. If the consensus is that yours is worse than average, you'll know that a repair is required.
If you don't want to send the loco to Lionel's service center in North Carolina, they *might* be willing to sell you a replacement frame with the driving wheels and main drive gear already installed. It won't be cheap, and it will still be a major repair. Good luck and please share what you find out.
