Has MTH, Lionel, Weaver, anybody? offered one of these, or was even an old kit once offered?  They exist, of course, in HO, brass, and kits, but I don't think anybody has offered any in three rail, or even in a 1940's O scale wooden kit.....(apparently they were made of wood like a barrel because of the acidity of vinegar)  Probably another thing I am going to

have to scratch build....

In wood, nothing comes to mind.  Others may have some help in this area.

But, I believe K-Line made a version of the wooden vinegar tanker in plastic a many moons ago.  Others may chime in to confirm or refute.

If you can find someone who has the instructions from the old Ambroid "1 of 5000" HO kit line of the 50's, you might be able to clone one in O scale.  And I know there have been prototype articles written about this unique car.

Good luck!

MTH made a wooden tank car in their Railking line (30-73219).  It scaled out a little over 30 feet.

Overland made one in brass.  it does not show up very often.

Martin Brechbeil in O Scale Trains magazine #22 authored and article on scratch building one of these.  You can download that issue directly from them for free

I would love to have a car or two if they were available at a reasonable price.  There are lots of specialty cars that the railroads ran that I would like to see modeled.

Ken,

I agree with you about the K-Line offering. A number of years ago both the pickle and vinegar cars were announced by Sunset Models ( I still have the color ad sheet)  but they never came to fruition since Heinz stepped in and wanted big bucks for the rights to use their name.

Lobaugh made the pickle car kit in O scale decades ago. I have one of the Overland brass vinegar cars and have been offered $600 for it as a pricing reference.

Yes, I did scratch built one what seems now to have been a long time ago in O Scale Trains.

It's not a terribly difficult project to build; getting correct decals might prove more difficult particularly if Heinz wants to get paid.

Plenty of prototype info and plans are available, too.

MTH locator found one vinegar car at an HS, but it was sold.  I can't say I am crazy about the appearance of that series of MTH cars, but I wish MTH would offer those trucks separately.  Since I would build it for my fictitious modified Menards pickle

plant, I would letter it, and vat cars, for it, and couldn't care less about Heinz.  As

shown above, wrapping a cardboard tube in basswood strips might be a good start, if I

have to build one.

The horse transport flatcar commonly associated with the Lionel General might suit as a starting point if one can be purchased cheaply.  In fact all the cars associated with the General use arch bar trucks, as on the MTH vinegar car.

Unfortunate that Heinz resorted to extortion on these.....but there were other lettering schemes but I guess none so well known or recognized as Heinz...

In any case, here's a set of plans for the vinegar car:
