Woodland Scenics Tree armature painting

Instead of still trying to figure this out on my own, I am looking for advice on painting the tree armatures that come in the tree kits. I picked up several kits at the last York meet and have twisted them all into shape.
I'm hoping someone can suggest spray paints and techniques to give these armatures a realistic look prior to attaching all the foliage.
