It was used for actual railway training from 1913 to 1995. Unfortunately, I've never been there when it's being demonstrated.
I strongly recommend the NRM as an item on any train lover's bucket list.
Diode matrix control of interlocking turnouts can perform similar one push button routing on a linear layout.
