I just picked up at a bargain basement price a Lionel 53 Snow Plow in cosmetically great shape but the worm wheel is for all intents and purposes shredded so she won't run.  I would like to repair this myself but I am wondering how difficult this might be.  I've already checked and there are a few places that have brass worm wheels available for this unit.   Is this something I can do myself?  I know I can pull the wheels but how difficult is it to pull the worm wheel and replace it ?  Also will I have a quartering problem when replacing the wheels?  Any advice or assistance will be appreciated.

You only need to pull one wheel, but you will need to punch out the axle through the frame to get the worm wheel off of it. Put the frame up on two high blocks with the opposite wheel between them and using a long punch, punch the axle down and out of the gear.

Reassembly is the opposite, however you need to add 'U' shaped shims inside the frame over the axle on the far side of the gear when you punch the gear in place to get the gear centered.

It will take a few punches from both ends, and adding or subtracting shims to get the gear centered.
