I have read the CAB 2 manual, and read many posts here through the search function.

What is the practical application of programming the Cab 2 controller for "routes?"

Currently I control all my switches by selecting SW ID#, then controlling the switch the way I want the loco to go.

Thanks for helping me to understand all of this....

It's quite simple. Lets say you have to run through 5 switches in the loop you want to run. You can set all the switches before hand one at a time or set them as the train gets close to them or set up a route. You would record the route by going through all the motions to set all 5 switches. Once it's recorded you only have to press the route number and all the switches get set automatically.

DarioF,

Think of it as Legacy switch programming to guide your train in a certain manner thru out your layout.  DCS also has this, however each switch must be wired to the AIU, for switch control and accessory control, to be operated remotely from the hand held.  The Legacy is completely wireless with the FT CC switches, I love it.

This is the main thing I use it for, if I have guests for a play trains session I want to make sure we start with a clean slate.

I am going to program routes today for setting the switches back to their straight-through position and easier access to the yard.  Both great ideas!!
