Years ago I use to have Train America do my DCS upgrades. AS we all know they are no longer. So I have been searching for a new company to do my upgrades. I have seen and spoke with J.D.S. Limited Productions  in York for several years now and I was impressed with their offering.

My K-Line Hudson had the EOB board fail last year and has been a shelf queen ever since. Friday I took my scale Hudson and told them I wanted Proto 2 installed, a new smoke unit and their whistle steam upgrade. This evening (Monday) I get an e-mail with a Fed-EX tracking number letting me know it has been completed and has been shipped. TO make things even better than the fastest upgrade I have ever seen they gave me a link to see my engine running right before it was boxed up and sent to me. Here is the video-

OK-I'm impressed--now I just have to figure out which engine is next.

JDS has done several upgrades for me (a MTH Cabforward and a Williams brass Mikado) and they have both functioned as advertised.  Jeff is very professional and I would highly recommend his services for anyone wanting DCS upgrades.

I had always enjoyed the Williams Mikado but since 1998 when I became hooked on command control, it had been a shelf queen.  I delivered it to Jeff at York last year and received it back within two weeks.  Great service!

Happy railroading,

Don

3 questions:

I was counting 8 chuffs per rev, can you change the chuff rate?

Do the chuffs stop when the whistle blows?

Where do you load the smoke fluid for the whistle?

1) You can always change the chuffs in the DCS system. I will reset it once it gets here (According to the tracking number that will be Wednesday).

2) The chuffs continue even when the whistle blows. The secret to make this work is that you have to run the engine run through the DCS variable, which is the way I run mine anyway.

3) I think it uses the same smoke unit. I will know for sure once it arrives.

Scott, I had an MTH proto 1 NYC Hudson upgraded to proto 2 by a local hobby shop here on the West Coast a few years ago for $300 including the new board.  I guess $400 is not that bad considering it was not an MTH engine and may have requried additional work.  However, I think you said you supplied the board too.  Have prices gone up that much in the last few years?  Anyway it looks and sounds good and if you are happy with it, that's what counts.

I found my receipt, so here is the breakout of the cost:

Labor PS-2 upgrade........$149.99

Whistle Smoke Upgrade. $170.00

ProtoSmoke Unit............ $64.99

Shipping.........................$25.00

Total..............................$409.98

So there you have it. It should be here tomorrow--on my wife's birthday--bad timing. She had a bit of a fit this morning when I told her it was over $300.00 for the upgrade.

JDS has done work for me and I would like to say that I'm very happy with the product. I did not get the level of up grade that Scott got, just a O-27 Polar Express smoke and light with fireman and engineer. But, it looks and sounds great. They do top of the line work.

I wish you many happy years with your Hundson Scott. I have a K-Line Hundson that I would like them to work on. I have the DCS kit for it but I wont to wait until I have the extra cash to get it done.

Good luck and have fun.

Scott,

If you ever need a place to hide, you can say with me, your wife will never find you, I'm in the "WIT-less" Protection Program.

I just got the engine in and I want to make this clarification, the steam whistle effect ONLY works in conventional mode. I thought that if I ran through the variable mode and then it would work under command with the whistle and that is not the case at all. JDS has been more than fair with me on this misunderstanding. The DCS upgrade is quite nice by itself.

Very nice, but very, very expensive: $410.00 + $180.00 for DCS board equals almost $600.00!! That's well into engine replacement territory. I think I would have just replaced the EOB with an ERR cruise commander for $85.00 and been done with it. Could have bought another new engine as well and had money left over!

Thanks for the information on that steam whistle, though. For $170, I would consider that. I might think about putting one of those in the new Legacy Mikado I got.
