It sounds like a kids book!! But if you know what I am talking about, also called the Buck Rodgers by some, it is cool!!

I was a west coast rail fan when my now father-in-law pulled his 'Pennsy Power' books down and told me to read them!!! I knew of the Pennsy but I was an UP, SP and AT&SF fan. But here were all these ultra cool locomotives and bunches of daily workhorses. And while I am not exclusively a Pennst fan I do collect lots of PRR stuff.  I bought a scale T1 last year, had a scale GG1 and a few others.

And while I thought the S1 was a cool loco I didn't think I could ever find one in 'my' price range. That changed a few days ago when I won one in a online bid.

And upon opening the 3rd Rail box all I could say was WOW!

PRRS1a

This is one of those times being a conventional operator is a plus. I got a really good deal.....but since I did not have to worry about upgrading the electronics if I won it I think it went much cheaper than a command version may have. And what a monster she is!

PRRS1b

She looks as if she has never been run or less than an hour maybe....not to surprising considering the track needed to run her. A little dusty, I JUST pulled her from the box, and some very minor cosmetic issues I will fix easily.

PRRS1c

Now I need to get busy and get my O-100 track laid down and run this monster......

Anyone else run the 3rd Rail S1 on a regular basis???

Yeah, even a NYC fan like me has to love the looks of that thing - breathtaking.

I have bench-tested my (3rd Rail) version and it ran fine - on rollers. I wish

that I had waited for the Lionel version as I run TMCC, but I can fix that if I choose.

Since they were so big, but apparently popular enough for THREE importers to offer

a 3-rail version, I'm surprised that a RK Imperial and/or Lionmaster version never

appeared. It would still be impressive, but of a more manageable size that many

more could have bought - and I think that they would have.

On reflection, while it was an impressively big and an incredibly good looking loco, and I still want one, in some ways it was like some of the big Soviet locos such as the A-20-1: built partly just to impress and be the bigbest possible, and ultimately just too big and unwieldy to be practical.  Of course, at least the S-1 was well engineered and did run well, rather than just tear up the tracks like the A-20.

I agree with Lee that the S-1 was partially built to be impressive. That is shown in its selection to be showcased at the World's Fair. The primary purpose of its creation was to replace the K-4s that were great engines but needed to run double headed on most passenger runs. Pennsy was looking for a single engine powerful enough to pull passenger consists at high speed. The problem came in maintenance and the (I think) short shortsightedness, not typical of Pennsy, in not realizing it was too big for most of the rail lines it was designed to run in.

I got the unskirted version..#37 out of 75...I run this alot on my carpet layout..Its belt drive too..very quick and smooth running engine..Im upgrading mine to TAS EOB so I can run lionels S1 sounds in it..I'll get a better pic when the sun move to front of my appartement..my back door is snowed in..WOW..My run time is about maybe 20hrs?..had this train for about over 2 years..I think I know where you got your at...I keep my eyes on these on the net....heres my 3rd rail PRR fleet..

To me there doing a scared tactic on US...3rd rail just bent when we can get a great deal on there trains used..instead of paying big bucks on them when there new.....even if you payed full price on them...They should keep parts on there trains....If they want to compete against other model train company's,,,plus other model train company's stocks parts on there trains.... I improvise if I need parts...there's other train company's that there parts can be compadable.....3rd rail customer service call backs needs work.....

I never had any problems getting parts.

But that was back when Gary worked there before the Big Move.
