Hey guys-

You know me and the Northern Pacific. Earlier I picked up the RK Scale Northern Pacific RS3 from MTH. This locomotive right here...

And I was horrified. When I listened to the Protosounds this 1950's ALCO had a sound chip that reminded me of a modern GE or EMD locmotive from the 1990s. From the bell, horn, etc...

Have others had this problem? I was looking forward to picking this up. Now...I'm pretty miffed about the Proto sounds as they are quite anarchronistic. Has this happened on other locomotives? If you have had this problem what have you done?

Also are there any other forumites who have this Northern Pacific RS3 and notice the same thing. Please tell me I am not the only one...

Reminds me of my RK PS2 Southern RS-1 which has a single chime horn sound but the model has a prototypical 3-chime horn on it! I looked for a different sound file but they all have that single "blat" horn...

You may want to consider the RS-1 sound file, the alco engine sounds are the best I've ever heard!

Here's a vid of my RS-1:

When I click on any of these files computer says "can't open them due to file extension type."  A search of the web for software to play them comes up empty.

How do you get them to "play" for you on your computer?

I see many of the Proto2 engines found via the Product Locator function don't have this feature, and most of the older Proto2 engines don't even have a sound file one can access.

Is there reason the "inventory" of Proto2 sound files is so incomplete on the MTH website?

One would think it would be fairly easy to have one for each Proto2 locomotive ...

I suspect they haven't had time to provide them or they're now concentrating on PS3 and what seems to be the new DCS"2" design taking precedence.  I don't think MTH realized how many folks were going to be upgrading their older engines, and didn't plan for making more upgrade kits and sound files available.  With PS2 becoming outdated I doubt we'll see any improvement.  I also doubt the PS3 files can be backloaded into older PS2 engines.

It would be nice if there was a "complete" list of all sound files so all you'd have to do is open the list and choose one, vice having to go to what seems like every engine they've made and guessing what you want to download.

When you search for files on MTH products go to "Service" on the left side menu of the home page.  Then "Product files and documents" on the right side middle of the new page.

You will find many of the documents needed that are not replicated on the Marketing Home Page.

You can then search for products under service like F-3 or RS-3, and you will get a list of the product and the documents and files available.

This makes it easier to search for parts list, sound files, instructions.  You can still do additional screening such as Premier, RK, RTR, Catalog, etc....   G

I was saying a lot of the entries don't have the speaker button so I was wondering if there was another way to hear the files being they are MP3 it seems.

That's also what I did.  Worked fine for me.

Many of those don't have operational buttons for anything but the instruction manual, although it lists the others like "Proto2 upgrade" etc; there isn't anything "behind" the buttons.

Speaking from experience, I grew up around RS-3s on the CNJ so I'm very familiar with their prime mover sounds. If the sound system in your model is the same as the sample provided on that link then it's quite accurate. Actually, listening to the clip brought back nice memories of CNJ's units switching the yards at E'port and Red Bank.

The bell of a CNJ RS-3 sounded pretty close to what you get with the MTH model. As far as the horn is concerned, different roads had different types of horns. CNJ RS-3s were equipped with the single chime variety whereas RS-3s rostered by other roads may have been equipped with either single or multi-chime horns. If you desire a single chime or a different multi-chime horn for your model, perhaps MTH has a file which combines accurate RS-3 prime mover sound with the type of horn you'd like.

I hope this helps.

That is true, but there are more files listed there then on the marketing page.  So I always search for documents via the service page.  G
