Hi,

I will be in the Gettysburg / York area this weekend and I was wondering if there are any good train shops in the York area to hit?  I am basically looking for original Pre-war and post-war items to add to my layouts.  I found B & E Junction Electric Trains on the net, but I am curious if there are others.

   Thanks,

White Rose Hobbies -- their website is www.dccinstalled.com

I have been there, small O gauge selection, lots of track and stuff like that, though.  Guy is just starting out, very friendly.

As far as Gettysburg, Tommy Gilberts is a great hobby shop:

Again, small O gauge selection but awesome supply of other stuff and a good old "Like I remember" hobby shop.

Then there is Toy Trains Unlimited in Hanover, PA, just between York and G-Burg:

This guy has tons and tons of O-gauge stuff, fairly well-organized, good prices, but you might want to call first, his hours seem to be very flexible.  I have literally driven up and the lights were out during business hours but when he saw me try the door, he turned them on and let me in.

There is another Gettysburg shop out near the Seminary School IIRC it has a small pink steam engine in front of it.  Been there, forget the name.  Lots of stuff there literally in the guy's house, so it's great for "hunt/browse" types.

If you feel like venturing down into MD from Gettysburg there is always Catoctin Mountain Trains in Thurmont.  Their reputation speaks for itself.  It's a nice drive down 15, too, some nice country out there.

That pretty much does York and Gettysburg as far as I know off the top of my head and from my own travels.

I am on assignment in the area and have visited all the train shops in area for the the last two weeks.

My favorites are Catoctin Mountain Trains in Thurmont,MD for MTH,Trains Unlimited in Hanover is a  good choice for Postwar,AF and out of production trains and Cool Trains in Salunga has a small selection of used trains. All have good prices.

Lastly,I VERY highly recommend Barry's Train Shop in Elizabethtown,Pa. Largest selection of Lionel in the area.Great prices, great folks.A must visit,Period.

Kevin:

I’m surprised that no one has mentioned Carver’s Train Shop in Gettysburg right on Route 30 a little west of downtown.  Since you are looking for pre-war and post-war, this is the shop you should visit first.  IMO it’s the best train shop in York or Gettysburg for original post-war trains.  Here’s a link to a previous thread on this subject:

I stopped there again on my way to York last month and was not disappointed.  He had lots of nice post-war Lionel.  He also had some pre-war.
