I was a HO'er before the switch to O 3r in 1993. And I still have all my HO stuff....and when I find REALLY good deals in HO at train shows I buy sometimes....so I guess I have not left yet. And the stuff the HO guys are getting reminds me of the days we in O were getting 4-8 newly tolled locos a year from MTH, Lionel and Atlas EACH!

And with MTH tooling many cool locos in HO now...it's tempting for sure. Not to mention all the cool stuff Athearn, Atlas and Bachmann seem to add all the time.

Rex,

The Golden Gate train was The Columbian. I looked at the Walthers website regarding The Capitol Limited and they are offering the mid to late 1950's era Capitol which was frequently combined with The Columbian west of Willard.

Hence three of the cars being offered by Walthers were recently done by GGD as part of The Columbian - the coffee shop/combine, coach, and dome coach were all part of GGD's train.

GGD has not done the twin unit diner, Slumbercoach, 16 and 4 duplex, fluted side 10 and 6, fluted Budd dome, and flat end observation for The Capitol.

Interestingly, Scott e-mailed the Walthers announcement to me this AM. Why do you think he did that? Keep the faith. Don't go back to HO.

Rhetorical question......right?  C'mon, no use denying your Beano allegiance/passion!!

At first I was confused by the Walthers release.  My era of recollections was late 40's early 50's.  I mentioned this in threads long ago, but my personal experience of ridership was on the Columbian, all coach.  However, Dad frequently traveled from D.C. to the west coast and always departed on the Capitol Limited (affectionately called 'the Cap' in my neighborhood l-o-n-g before I knew about the ATSF's El Capitan and it's identical moniker.).  What was eye-popping to me was to see him board a Santa Fe sleeper at Union Station, D.C., which he rode all the way through Chicago to the coast.  And Walthers has noted this in their listing of consists.  And I remember that the Santa Fe car blended quite well with the Beano's Cap shiney Pullmans....except, of course, for the letterboard.

No, I probably won't be bailing on the O3R empire in the basement, but I might succumb to a few pieces of HO candy!  I know that once they're gone I'd have major remorse.

All in all, it's good to see our Beano getting its due....finally....in BOTH scales!!  And that's in large part due to your encouragement to Scott!!  THANKS!!! for the Columbian and soon-to-be Cincinnatian!!

Wow!  Thank you, Walthers, for a bit of good gnus in the midst of the rest of the planetary poop!

Happy, happy, happy!

Rex,

According to the Walthers website the cars are $ 80 each. GGD Columbian cars were

$ 200.

KD,

When the Santa Fe Super Chief train was done by GGD there were extra 10 and 6 sleepers available with the correct car names for the B&O/SF run through service.

I recall riding The Columbian from Balto-Chicago in 1958 and there was a Santa Fe sleeper on the train as well as the Slumbercoach. That time the Columbian and Capitol were run as separate trains from Washington to Chicago although The Columbian carried cars from The Ambassador from Balto-Willard.

Not sure why the Santa Claus sleeper was on The Columbian instead of The Capitol that day  but my guess would be to even the load of cars since the Cap usually ran with about 12 cars at that time, and The Columbian had its normal 8 plus the RPO plus the Slumbercoach plus the SF car. The trains were carded about 10 minutes apart as I recall so there was no problem with getting the SF sleeper to Dearborn on the later arriving Columbian.

Ha.  Ha.  Ha.

Kinda reminds me of two Bighorn rams vying for courtship rights!

You'll have to admit, Don, that #235's nose, especially, is pretty tough!...it won this face-off!

Interesting photo from another perspective.   Long before the Feds laid down crash standards for autos, EMD, apparently, was trying to keep the crew cab intact in a collision.

Next time I take the top off one of my F units, I'll have to check and see if there's a 'dotted line' across the frame just behind the cab!

Mahalo nui loa.

I do love the B&O passenger livery.  I have an A-B-A shark set and set of cars and it is one of the most beautiful sets I have.  Would love to have some E9s, etc., and a full Capital Limited or Columbian - although the pictures I see have it always as an A-B set and I'd prefer to run A-B-A just because .

As to the pull of HO - i am beyond its even horizon and will stay there.  Yes, there is more availability and selection in HO than in any other scale, and yet all of us (well, at least yours truly) went into O knowing that.  However, I do always look through the Walthers catalog with a sigh - to me some of their Super Chief and other western RR offerings are very appealing.

So I've no regrets about my decision eight years ago to jump to O from N, rather than go with HO.  I love the large size, detail, etc., of O gauge locos.  And the sound - I've listened to HO locos with sound, and it is good sound considering the small speakers, etc.  But a good Legacy loco is almost worth buying just for the sound . . .

Lee,

Golden Gate Depot did the Columbian 8 car train recently.

As far as B&O passenger diesels go almost any mix could be seen including A-B, A-A, A-B-A. Most times that I rode or watched  The Columbian and Capitol A-A seemed to be the most common configuration for power.

It was very common to see a mixture of E-6, 7,and 8 units..

Oh, I was being a tad hyperbolic there

John P: I have a vast collection of HO from the years before I saw the light (and AGHR). It perplexes my wife. But, I'm the roach motel of toy trains: they check in but the never check out...
