I thought I would start a different type of topic. I got to thinking about the NS & UP Heritage Units. So with that, I wanted to make this in a different way then usual for a question. And what I mean by that is, it can't be a 2nd favorite or a 3rd, but your all time one favorite NS & UP Heritage unit. So with that, below are 2 photos of my favorite NS Heritage Unit & UP Heritage Unit.

Photo 1: NS Viriginian heritage SD70ACe #1069 leading NS eastbound intermodal 20Q in Hudson Ohio back on Sat Oct 18th, 2014.

Photo 2: Not a good photo, but this was at night around 8:30PM and he was moving quite fast for a freight that night of UP Southern Pacific heritage SD70ACe #1996 trailing 2nd on NS westbound freight 309 in Madison Ohio back on Tue March 22nd, 2016.

Photo 3: Same unit and location but photo capture from my video camera.

On the UP side I am torn between the Katy, SP and CNW.  Right now though I do prefer the SP, not because I am an SP fan but it seems to fit the SD70 carbody the best.

I have people look at my models of the SP, CNW, MP, and Katy.  Many say the SP is longer.  No, I say, it is the paint scheme which makes it look longer.

Now. However, on the UP side, The CNW looks closest to a livery that road used.

In that regard, NS did a better job.  Of their units I do think the Virginian is the best.

My personal favorites are a tie between NS's Pennsylvania and New York Central units.  Its all because growing up I had a two MTH Steamers (one for each RR) with appropriate fleets of RailKing passsenger cars.  Attic roof collapsed one winter destroying most of the family's trains. I think my dad had it worse since among the loses was his Lionel Wabash AB set from the early 50s that he bought after working in orchards for a summer as a kid.

My favorite UP heritage unit is the Chicago and Eastern Illinois Heritage unit.

Their first mainline into Chicago is the C&EI LINE, Villa Grove is still a crew change point and my Grandfather was a Boilermaker at the Villa Grove Roundhouse which is still there sans the turntable.

I know, I know, fat chance. But I can beat my drum once in  awhile.

I'm a Katy fan through and through and was very thankful to finally acquire the Katy Heritage engine in American Flyer S scale:

BUT! In my opinion the show stopper of a Heritage engine is the NS Green/yellow Illinois Terminal SD70Ace I have in American Flyer S scale:

Here's the real thing:

That color combo always gets a lot of positive comments.

Mark, speaking of 1072, I missed it today, but 1072 lead NS westbound loaded coal 546 in Ohio today. If he leads 1072 back east tomorrow, I'll try and go out to see the glow worm tomorrow. Also I'll be sure to post a photo here since you mention this is your favorite Heritage. Now that's if he's leading and I have time to see it.

On the UP side it would be C&NW - On the NS side it would be hands down the 1072, Illinois Terminal unit. I grew up watching the IT run past my home until the ICG abandoned that section of the Decatur District in April of 1980. I have fond memories of that time, it's always been my favorite railroad. I also can't stand that nickname "Glow Worm" but, to each his own.

Tom,

My favorite NS Heritage engine is the first one I ever saw in person.....The Virginian. I also have the Lionel Legacy version. Honorable mentions go to the Illinois Terminal and the Lehigh Valley engines.

John, thanks. Yes, for me, I have the MTH Premiere version.

Also Panther97, I saw that same exact train in Hudson Ohio & Macedonia Ohio back on Saturday Feb 28th, 2015.

That's funny!   The heritage chase started for me that day.  I downloaded the app and 10 minutes later I saw that the Mon was coming through.  I spent the next 2 years trying to see them all.
