That depends - premium sets have been around for as long there has been the difference between low-priced and top of the line items. How far do you want to go back in terms of sets, or are you focusing on current production Lionel?
There will probably be lots and lots of opinions on this one. I personally like the Lionel tinplate M-10000 Union Pacific with a couple of extra passenger cars. It makes a very impressive presentation while running on an O-81 or larger curve. Came out in 2010 as an MTH/Lionel joint effort. It was not super-expensive at the time, but I think it may be hard to find now.
The Southern Pacific Oil Train with the SD40-2T that was in the 2013 Volume 2 catalog seems like a really good buy in my opinion.
I really like the CP grain train, but that one might be prior to 2010. The Motor City Express is another. Have both unused. Looking forward to breaking them out pretty soon.
Best price set ever The Lionel legacy JLC Bigboy with free legacy remote when pre-ordered for only $1,200 http://www.lionel.com/Products...E5190&PageID=871
I always liked the 6-31783 BNSF Ice Cold Express. There was a cryo add-on car and I believe LCCA had an add-on car.
Fantasy train, but cool looking (sorry for the pun).

I like that set too, but don't want the fantasy engine and caboose. The cars are legit, and very pricey when you can find them. I saw the LCCA car, asking $131 last week. It was a no sale at that price.
