Been wearing them since 1995 or 96, having them has helped in a lot of ways and not so much in others.  It is kind of nice to hear big steam working but most of the time I don't have the volume very high or leave it off so as not to disturb any of the my family or friends.  If I'm by myself I'll crank up the volume otherwise it is way down or off.  I could see where the bell ringing constantly would become very annoying and think it is a good idea to be able to turn it off.

Yes - I wired the bell wire of the crossing signal to a switch on my control panel (it's the red one) so that I could stop the bell from ringing if it got too annoying. I don't remember which wires I used, but it should be apparent from the Z-stuff instruction manual.

If there are separate wires going to the speaker, an on/off switch on the hot wire between the power supply and the speaker should do the trick.

I did this with my MTH crossing with bell, good thing too, its almost as loud as areal one LOL!
