So here is a picture is what I am in the process of adding to my small 4'x8' layout. The lower lever is all 027 track which I love for the smaller layout but I wanted a loop of track where I could use some larger diameter curves:

As you can see I am using the "sheet rock" shims method for adding

sides to the elevated level. I know I have see others do this so I have

2 questions.

Question #1 is....What color should I paint the side walls. I have been

considering brown as well as gray and cannot decide. Does anyone have

pictures of their own layouts the show examples of this showing what color

you decided on?

Question #2 is.....In the examples that I have seen posted, others have used

wooden strips (match sticks?) to add braching/ribs to the outside walls. How

far aprt should these be spaced to look prooper?

Thanks in advance for any help that can be provided!

Ken

Question 1: concrete grey would be my preference, but suit yourself.

Question 2: sounds like a lot of extra work to add ribs; smooth concrete-colored panels will look reasonably credible, but if you want ribs I suggest you search for photos of something that looks good to you, and go with that.

Looks like good progress on your layout ... can you show us some more pics ?

Strogey,  here are a few photos of our elevated area that we used drywall shims too.  We painted ours a green and added rust.  When the layout is finished I will go back and add more ribs to the sections, I wished I had put more on when building it.  As you can see our bridge is built in 3 sections for ease of installing.  We even wired the supports with electrical for lights some day.  You can paint it any color your heart desires.  Good luck hope this helps.  Nick

The file may need adjustment in the print settings before you print. If you want it to fit a drywall shim, you might need to set the scale at 97% or something else as each printer will vary.  Here is a screen shot of my print dialogue box.  I cant remember what I had it set at last Winter, but it is more than 93% to get it to fit right.

Well I may have to build a safety rail around mine because my nephew just ran my Polar Express of the top into a new Christmas box car below. The box car is scratched and even a small crack but it probably saved my Berkshire. The rear wheels came off the Berkshire and I just put it up and told the kids it was broke. I’ll check it out later when everybody is gone to see how bad it is.
