Would appreciate a perspective on a post war layout.  The 153c connectors and block signals can be used to "block sections" allowing 2 trains to use the same track.

The layout I am considering has an inside and outside loop, with a portion being shard by both trains.  Question is, can the 153c connectors and black signals be used to run the train in opposite directions?  all the information and instructions I have seem to only reference trains running in the same direction.

thanks a ton...  M

To run opposite direction, you would need a passing siding. This would best be done with relays, described here

In the same direction on a loop you can automate point to point described here

Using relays for block detection is described here

Once you do it, it is not that hard. For the same direction on a loop when a train reaches a point it starts the one ahead of it. No collisions as long as cars stayed coupled and the locos are locked in forward. The trains follow each other around a loop.  All relays are, are automated switches that turn things on and off.

The 153 contacter can be used to accomplish the OP. I believe what he is saying is that there are 2 loops of track with a throat section. the trains can run in opposite directions. The switches need to be wired together together to throw in the same direction. The 153 contactor is like a relay in that it has a wiper and N/open and N/closed contacts. It is activated by the weight of the train. I think you need 2 contactors to accomplish the job. It would be wired the same a crossing guard for a 90 degree crossing.

sounds like I can run both in opposite directions-  just want to add interest/variety. thanks for responding...

To clarify your statement, the 153C with an isolated block forms the control section of track.

A Block Signal or Semaphore is used to indicate the state of the block...on or off.

You could have an isolated block controlled by a 153C without a signal or semaphore. It's nice to have a visual confirmation.
