So, I lubed my 1661E today and set it in the track to see where it was at. The e-unit would cycle, but only at a high voltage and using the direction button on the transformer. The engine did run a few laps in both directions. It stopped suddenly and started smoking. I killed power right away. I removed the motor from the engine. I have questions

The e-unit appears to be upside down and is secured between the two side frames with one screw. Is that correct?

The commutator is filthy and needs to be cleaned. Also, need to inspect the brushes. The brush plate appears to be fiber and secured to the motor with a couple of brass tubing type pins, possibly peened? How do I remove and re-install the brush plate?

I am trying to get some ideas before I tear into it. I don't have much experience with repairing motors except for cleaning some postwar commutators and brush replacements. Thank you for any guidance.
