I have the #192 control tower and have noticed on one corner of the upper platform an extrusion for something. So I checked out the#175 launching pad, and their it is again. Does anyone know what this is for? Thanks, and keep the rails polished

It may have been for an antenna.
Thanks dave45681. Now, where can I find one. I bet they made out of unoptamium!
The postwar Lionel 192 tower may not have come with the antenna. Some folks have stated this. Tandem Associates does not show an antenna on their site. Plus I do not see the antenna on the parts list for this piece.
A antenna was never included as it won't clear the roof.

Lionel doesn't sell them anymore,
even though that Mounting Bracket is still molded into the accessory ! I ordered 3 from MTH !!!

If you want an antenna, try a Lionel parts dealer, they are available as reproductions. But see the other posts, the antenna won't clear the roof.
The MTH Part # is : HH5200242 .
$3.50 plus shipping !!

By the way, an original postwar Lionel 192 railroad control tower is a difficult piece to find in nice shape. They were very damage prone, plus the lamp tended to melt the roof.
At one time it was even unusual to see cruddy ones. But when Lionel announced the first reissue, those cruddy ones came out of the woodwork and were everywhere.
Everybody is so helpfull and knowledgeably. Now I know everything about something so small and obscure. Amazing!!! Thanks to everyone for your info and experience. I'm going to take a spring, stretch and straighten about 6in. Leaving maybe half in. Still coiled and calling it a 23mm high gain!

I got mine off of eBay new not working. Problem 1, one of the metal poles ( which carry currant to the top for lite and motor) had dislodged from the spring clip under the base. Problem 2, the motor slug was FULL of graphite. And 3,the rotation platform center pole had been forced up to comply with all that graphite down in the motor hole. If it doesn't fit force it, was the rule of the day! Now it runs down to 7volts! Another thing. During my learning curve the roof got soft over the lite. I shut down just in time, but it did bubble. My fix was to tape a 1in.by1in.piece of aluminum foil to the ceiling. Keep those rail's polished
