Hi, first time on the OGR love the site, love Lionel heck love trains.... I have two steamers from 1995 with about 10 to 15 hours of run time. the B&A stop chuffing back in 2011 when I took down my layout. I started a new layout about six weeks ago and but the B&O Hudson on the track for the first time. The Railsounds were ok for a few minutes and than I lost the chuffing.I do have bell's and horns and I get one or two chuffs when the engine first moves. But that's it. I looking for some direction, I retired and my skill level is poor on circuit boards I'am more of a post war mechanical guy.

welcome!
a good guess would be the chuffing switch needs replaced or cleaned.
Do you know if that had a can motor and puffer for smoke?

Patrick, Thank you for your welcome and your knowledge.I will see what I can do in the morning and let you know how I make out.
i dont have to much knowledge but if you click on that link above its a B&A diagram from around 1995
it wont be long before others will help ya out just mostly wanted to say Welcome...
I have that engine. I know some of the early geeps had the cherry switch. But, I think that some of the early steamers may have used the hall effect transistor and round magnet?
If that is the case..I think there is a plastic mounting bracket mounted to one of the trucks. It holds the hall effect sensor and the pickup roller.
In the case of a railsound boxcar that I just repaired the circuit board on there was a second issue. THe RPM rev. It wound up being the plastic mounting bracket I'm referring to above had to much side to side movement. It had developed a hair line
crack. The sensor would not sit in proper proxmity to the hall effect sensor.
The C&O from that time period could be the #18045 Yellow Belly Hudson?!
Marty
I am probably like you, I don't mess with electronic or mechanical fixes. However there are several Forum members who can help you out if you can't figure out the issue.
Alex Malliae or Marty Fitzhenry come to mind right away. And by the way, welcome to the Forum. A great place to be.
Supplement 31 has the C&O Hudson. Shows the cherry switch somewhere around the smoke unit plunger.
I know that cherry switches can fail if they're contaminated by smoke fluid.
Hope this helps,
Fred

Hi to everyone who have responded to my post, and for your welcome to the OGR. I think I am going to put my steamers on hold and continue track work. I am sure that I will soon have something else that I will need help with. ALL ABOARD
Hi everyone, back in feb. I was looking for help with a 1995C&O Hudson that stopped chuffing and steam shutdown. I have installed a new cherry switch, the old one was full of smoke fluid, but the new switch did not solve the problem. I ordered some parts for the Boston&Albany Tender that unit has the system that used the magnet. Any help will be appreciated.
Have you tried a reset on the engine(s)? these have early railsounds 2 and I have had problems at times with the chuff and complete railsounds shut down with the early railsounds. Might want to add a battery and see if that fixes it.
What other information are you looking for?
thanks Chuck, I will give it a try and let you know.
HEY CHUCK, YOU THE MAN. The battery did the trick.... THANK'S
