The L1 is a no brainer for Pennsy fans. It was one of their largest classes, and factoring inflation in (even before the recent economic issues) it’s cheaper than when MTH last offered it in 2007. It’s also got whistle steam! Seeing as the MTH version is rare as hens teeth, (yes I know there is one in the for sale forum) I preordered one. I just hope the gearbox is solid and the paint is correct. NO SILVER SMOKE BOXES! I went for the Juniata built 1369 with the early Trainphone prototype.

I also picked up an N6b mainly because they correctly called it a cabin car, but also because those are somewhat rare too. I might get another in the MoW yellow.

I know literally zero about the prototype, but the Legacy L1s have to be one of the best bargains in Legacy steam in a long time. I hope it turns out perfect for you!

Thanks! And you’re spot on too! It is a really good deal! The MTH L1 tooling was great so we know the detail will be there, and adding Legacy sounds and whistle steam should make it a nice package. MTH never did the L1 in PS3 so an updated sound set was due. Hopefully it has the correct PRR banshee whistle.

I wish they offered PRR L1 #520 as a stand alone piece......since the #520 is the only remaining example of the PRR L1 it would be cool to own, but of course Lionel marketing  figured it would be popular and made it part of a pricey set .........

Get in touch with Mr. Muffins Trains. Steve has been known to break up sets fairly often. It certainly couldn't hurt to ask.

@SusieQ, other than many years later, a lot better set of wheels, the older models jumped going through turnouts, the flanges needed trimming, Blue Tooth capable, better horn selection, better bell selection, most of all “ Warranty”. I had all 7 or 8 of the first offerings, sold them all. I’m looking at the Katy version. Happy Railroading Everyone

Yeah, the N6b's are enticing.  Because you can never be too thin, too rich, or have too many cabin cars.

But I couldn't tell.  Are they both center cupolas?  The N6b's, because they were built by the divisions, were not all as standard as might be expected of the "standard railroad of the world".  Some had off-center cupolas.

Anybody know?

George

The MTH N6b tooling (guessing that's what this is) was for a center cupola only.

Nothing I’m interested in. Maybe the ATSF Mikado for my collection but I think its another non prototypical engine for us Santa Fe suckers.   I was hoping they would do the 3460 Mth with whistle steam like the 2-10-4s.

I dont know why but I have no interest in the Challengers.  When I have later VL Challengers it just doesn't seem that interesting an engine to add.

actually, the PRR did really sell 3 L1s to ATSF in the 40s.

I think I liked the Big Book better, but there are still a few things in here I would at least like to have at some point. Basically one of the 2-6-0's, either Strasburg or the Middlestown & Humblestown, the PRR and NYC FA-2's, the N6b's and the UP H-15-44. I also liked some of the traditional O boxcars, mainly the Chevy and Ford ones, and then especially the Bazooka one too. And even though I don't know if I'd ever get it, I like that they made another scale version of a Postwar locomotive with the blue Marine Corps diesels.

I tend to shy away from Lionel products (So many negative experiences lately) but it is really difficult to pass up either the M&H 91 or SRC 89. Both engines I grew up around, and I already bit the bullet and went for the York 17 and SRC 90 models when those were announced. I would like to see the cylinders changed from sliding valves to piston valves though to better represent the CN E10a class, but I know that isn't happening since that'd cost money to retool.

Looks like my wallet got spared this time, no engines interested me this time.

Looks like 2500.00 is the new norm for the top-of-the-line engines.  I have so many engines now and that kind of money is over the breaking point for me.

But I can't pass up that cool piece of history in the Billups Crossing Gate.  I like that Lionel may be starting to look back into making some operating accessories.

Perfect timing for the Midway games too, as I am building an Amusement Park on my layout, so I will grab those.

Great selections though, for a volume II catalog.

As others have noted, the Legacy L1 Mikado is great value for a mid-size locomotive with whistle steam.  I bet Lionel sells a bunch of them.  Might even order one myself.

Interestingly, by the time you add all the cars on the Chessie passenger train, it's not night and day cheaper than 3rd Rail's upcoming version -- not at all.  For that kind of money, I know which one I'm getting.  :-)

And yes, I am tempted by a hobo car.  Some of the UP heritage stuff is cool but I don't run a whole lot of modern trains.
