I am new to the ogr. I recently pulled my dads train out of storage been in box for 40 yrs. I took apart cleaned and lubed well, had to take e-unit out and got loco running well for being down for so long. Run for 4 days in evenings. Other day it got hung up on switch and quit was tripping reset on transformer, so i just unwired brushes, feild and pickup shoes and sit on track still tripping reset. Any ideals thanks mike

You have a short circuit. It may be in the track, not the engine. Lots of great information in this 1954 guide for operating Lionel Trains:

PDF pg 7 touches on common sources for short circuits.
Also can't hurt to replace the old wiring in the locomotive. The insulation has a tendency to crumble after all these years.
Thanks for info. I have a old marx locomotive that runs on the track. I will change wiring out. Cant figure out it just stopping like that i have checked with ohm meter. Need to pull wheel so i can check inside chase? I have wiring diagram . check commutator was ok. What would cause short that way/ fast

Thanks for help.
The Marx locomotive running seemingly eliminates the track.
The likely culprit is older cracking insulation on the wires that is shorting out on the shell or elsewhere.
There is absolutely no need to remove a wheel or disassemble the motor frame. Those are touchy and delicate operations and their execution and re-assembly require special tools and forethought.
This is the wiring diagram for the 2026 that I would use:
