from a crate of worn postwar I received a 2046. worn, dirty, and barely ran. I did the obligatory clean of commutator, brushes, and electrical parts. but can figure out the friction like noise.
I will try to post a short video to demonstrate.

Did you lube BOTH sides of the armature shaft?
Ditto. Sounds like a dry Armature shaft. Oil both ends and that should disappear.
thank you mattr and train nut. 2046 runs quiet now.
awesome.
thank you mattr and train nut. 2046 runs exceptionally quiet now!
awesome.
what would you recommend I clean the shell with?
cleaning shell not part of my orig. inquiry. I will find info.
thank you folks, 2046 runs like new!
The bearing that the armature shaft runs in between the brushes will need periodic attention to keep that noise at bay. Try some grease rather than oil to help this end of the shaft.
D&H65, i used Labelle #106 lubricating grease. it works well. thank you for tune up reminders.
2046 rides the rails once more!
she does 031 curves and figure eight elegantly!
definitely worth the hours put in.
Leroof,
Excellent work getting 2046 back in action. That's the fun part of postwar...it can be neglected and abused but generally with a little effort revived.

Hey Fendermain, thanks for your comments.
Another postwartraumatic save! Been fortunate to experience the process.
This could become habit forming!
Have a strat-ospheric weekend buddy.

Leroof, Ja man I've saved a few myself although my latest engine..also a 2046...arrived in great condition. Have a great weekend yourself..some tele-vision might be the ticket.

Bard owls to the left of me, echo to the right, tele-vision tonight...lol. but yesterday I was stratomanning. Tomorrow? Looking at positioning an extension table for a different route. Still cleaning catenary poles for a possible up coming event. Will post the possibilities. I recently bought some fresh code 100 rail to feed the poles when or if up. The only issues with the catenary is layout maintenance. Hard to reach into layout without knocking stuff down. It's kind of a fence of sorts.
glad to hear your 2046 is just condition extroadinaire!

Down south had a nice write up on your owl friends..very cool. I am going to have to enjoy high wire action thru your efforts...i'm too old to reach that far on my layout. lol
