I've just finished restoring a 225E. I thought I was careful in setting up the valve gear operation. So I get it going and the engine will travel without any problem for about 2 loops around an oval , then all of sudden it slips of sync. I check that the eccentric rod screw is tight but sometimes it comes loose and puts the system out of sync What do I need to do to fix this?

Perhaps put a dab of Loctite (blue or purple, definitely not red!) on the threads of the screw holding the eccentric crank. Don't run it until the Loctite dries, hopefully it'll stay in place. If not, your screw is too short, or the threads in the wheel are stripped (which is a harder problem to solve!)
On the other hand, if the problem is that the "nubs" on the eccentric crank are worn, you can get a new crank. If the holes where those nubs fit into the wheel are worn, you would have to replace the wheel, which on a 225E is more of an expert-level repair. My $.02.
Some of the early steamers have a half moon keyed eccentric crank. I have both typs and the rivets to attach the eccentric rod.
I can't even get just the side rods alone to work
You state you’ve just finished restoring it……This is a spur gear set up. How far apart did you take it? ….1 tooth off can mess up your whole day,…….if you can’t get it to roll with just the side rods on, you’re out of quarter.

I did clean up the spur gear and motor connect. I'll check that again
With side rods off the motor and drive wheel run smoothly. Now I need to set it up and get the quarting correct How do I do it?
@Bob is cool! posted:With side rods off the motor and drive wheel run smoothly. Now I need to set it up and get the quarting correct How do I do it?
We’d have to see what you did to get it out of quarter. Just cleaning the spur gear and motor connect ( whatever that is?? ) shouldn’t have knocked it out of timing…….We can’t tell you how to fix it if we don’t know how you broke it……..😁

About the spur gear. I just cleaned out old dried up grease and put new in. It works fine. As far as the valve gear I had it all working then it would slip out of alignment after a couple of loops around an oval I now have disassembled the valve gear. So want to make sure to get qtred properly
Bob, if you didn't remove any wheels/axles (and no previous owner did), then it should just be a matter of reassembling the valve gear correctly. But if someone pulled a wheel and didn't reinstall it with proper timing, you won't be able to reinstall the side rods and make it run smoothly. You'll have to redo it. My $.02.
No wheels have been removed as far as I can tell. I had it running then the it popped out of place. I think I need to get the side rods lined up properly and then reassemble the rest of the gear. Maybe using some Loctite on the cross head screw
