i see how he removed it - need to study now how he got it back in - I see he took a couple of rivets out - will need to see how he re-attached it

thanks to the video you suggested I was able to remove the worm shaft assembly and clean and line the worm gears underneath on the front truck

Iim still deciding whether to dremel off the rivets on the rear truck to gain similar access there

but it clarified exactly what I had to do -

I never remove the rivets.  Pull up on the worm end opposite the coupler and remove the bronze bearing.  Then pry the gear forward and it will slip out of the bearing under the coupler plate.  Note the bearings are offset and must be installed so the worm sits deeper in the truck block.  I have done literally dozens and dozens this way.

That method sounds good to me

I was reluctant to “nudge” the piece out before - but it sounds reasonable that u wouldn’t hsve to remove the rivets

thanks for tip on not removing the rivets - successfully removed worm shaft, cleaned and then re lubed (red and tacky)

had a bit of a hard time re-seating the worm shaft but I got it in

how often do I need to do a complete removal - re-lube like that ?

I don’t run the loco all that much
