Good morning!

IMG_5882

What happened to cause this?  This appeared when I turned on remote this morning, I think I got rid of it by selecting another engine or turning off and on again, I can't remember. I was not running any lash-ups, also some engines have changed address's and can't load anything into this address, some engines don't start. Every thing worked good friday evening. I have 4 remotes all acting up only one with this message.

More information,  the remote that has the problem seems to like my PS3 E-8.  Upon start up even after all off, including power. Even after running other locomotives the Amtrak initially always comes up, sometimes on the inactive list sometimes active list. I even managed to start it once from inactive list, maybe that was good timing because the watchdog signal may have been missed. The photo is what comes up on the other remotes, never has been an engine listed there. Is there something i should be looking for or just let it go.  I stopped using address 26.   Clem

Clem,

The missing address is a completely different problem that is, unfortunately, generally correctable only by resetting the remote.

I suggest that you backup one of your other remotes that's working correctly, reset the problem remote and then restore the backed-up remote into the problem remote.

This process is described, in detail, on pages 149-151 of The DCS Companion 3rd Edition.

DCS Book CoverThis and a whole lot more is all in “The DCS Companion 3rd Edition!"

This book is available from many fine OGR advertisers and forum sponsors, or as an eBook or a printed book at OGR’s web store!

Clem,

I don't have a way to backup remotes.

That's unfortunate.

The only other way to retrieve a. missing engine slot is to reset and reload the remote. That can be time consuming if you have a lot of accessories and switch tracks in the remote. If it's just engines, It goes reasonably fast.

If you bring your remotes to the York DCS User Group Meeting in April, we'll clone them for you gratis. Otherwise, you could try to find a local MTH dealer who can do it for a nominal fee.

If you send the problem remote to me along with a good remote, and pay shipping both ways, I'll do it for you at no charge.

I thought of that,  When I tried to select it disappeared. Its not in the inactive list either but it does come up when you go for an address change. I'm gun shy about selecting it. I'll leave well enough alone. I also have an PS3 Amtrak E8 that likes to take off by itself fast, sometimes reverse sometimes forward. only way to stop it is to cut power. Each update ruins something for me, trains where less of an issue with Version 3. something.

Clem,

I also have an PS3 Amtrak E8 that likes to take off by itself fast, sometimes reverse sometimes forward.

That is almost certainly not a DCS problem.

When I tried to select it disappeared. Its not in the inactive list either but it does come up when you go for an address change

As I said before, the solution to that issue is either cloning a good remote into the bad one or a remote reset. Period.

I'm wondering if you have any record/playback recorded ?   Yes  if the recording is playing we should get a P beside the engine's name.   However this doesn't always happen. I would go through all the secessions  and hit the stop soft-key.  (long shot)

I still can't figure out why you can't find  ID 15 and delete it... The other screen 255L etc happens occasionally here as well.   Probably everyone gets it every now & then.... Makes for an interesting day in the world of DCS...

Clem 3.11 was a great version for super mode runners.  4.3 was pretty good and I find version 5 the best so far as far as remote response  time when actually running the trains.

Hi GREGG....... I use to run large MU's seems like I did not have nearly much trouble as I do now, version 5.0 is the worse. 2 unit MU usually not a problem. I do not use super mode yet, that E8 was in a record session, I'll check it out. My PS2 engines seem like they never miss a watchdog signal, all my PS3 will miss it, some more than others.

Thanks

Clem

Gregg,

What's most likely going now with the "missing 255 SMPH" engine is that there's "junk" in the engine slot. This causes the following.

  • The Add Engine function of DCS thinks that there's an engine already in the slot. That's why the slot doesn't show as available when seeking to add an engine to the remote.
  • However, the information doesn't look like an engine to the Engine List so when the list is displayed that DCS ID# is not displayed.
  • Further, the "engine" doesn't look like an engine to the Edit Engine, the Delete Engine or the Reset Engine menu functions. That precludes those functions from accessing the so-called "engine".

DCS is just a little "confused".

Hi Clem,

If you can get your problem remote cloned to the PC you can send me the remote file.  I have the ability to clear a "ghost" engine without resetting the remote, but I need a copy of the remote data file to make the correction.  It won't effect the bug that caused your "255 SMPH" readout, but it will get your engine back.
