Okay folks,  I am slowly bringing back to life a die-cast lionel 257.   The one I am working on had no reverse unit at all and the socket for the head light is simply missing.

I want to do right by this little machine,  but I have to admit it was worse under the hood than I expected.  I bought new wheels and axles from Henning's,  and am getting ready to clean the commutator.   But my big question is, how in the heck do I replace the wire coming from the pickup assembly?  I can even see the other end.  For some reason one of the rivets holding the pickup assembly on is missing.   I want to do right by this little machine,  and I have to admit it was worse under the hood than I expected.

The pickup is secured with eyelets, one has the pickup wire soldered to the middle of it. Removing the pickup will break the fiber plate.  Since the wire is attached to the pickup, strip the insulation and slide heat shrink down the bare wire until it contacts the plate.  You can shrink it with a heat gun.

The wire from the pickup goes to one brush holder, the field wire goes to the other brush holder.  If it runs backwards, reverse the wires to the brush holders.
