I attended the Cabin Fever auction at East Earl, PA, it is a Ted Maurer auction. I picked up one lot of prewar cars, it includes the green flat car with stakes, Shell tank car, an orange gondola and a caboose. These are 8 wheel cars, and I originally bought them for parts, but the cars are 99% complete (need one nickel plated flat car stake) and cleaned up so well that they are behind a 259 loco and tender on the layout. Pictures to follow. This was my first Maurer auction, won't be my last. Treated fairly, friendly staff and prices that were fair for both buyer and seller.

sounds like a good time.
congrats on your prewar find. being a small layout guy, i actually prefer the smaller 600/2600 cars over the XL sized 800/2800 freights. they look so much better negotiating O27 or O31 curves. and with so many operators favoring new production (i still don't see the attraction) the more common items from original collections up for auction are often great bargains.

Isn't great that you can buy a whole car for less than the price of a part or two you need off of it? Last weekend I bought a Sunoco tank car for $10. I figured the latch couplers were worth close to that, and I know I've paid a buck for a journal before, and this car had all eight of them.
But its a nice looking, complete car with some authentic looking weathering, so it will likely be doing laps soon.
Nice find on your cars. Your last sentence to me describes a successful transaction.

my problem with buying cars for parts is I usually end up fixing them instead!
Steamer,
You and me both buddy, most times the parts car ends up being fully restored and running in a consist! It's like a mental Tin Plate disease!
