While the 392E is well matched with the medium size cars (500, Stephen Girard), it is big enough to look good with the 200 series freight cars as well. Our museum has a 400E, a 392E, and a string of 200 series freight cars and we switch off the two locomotives to pull the freight train. Either looks fine.

Personally, I prefer the 392E over the 400E because it is more gracefully proportioned and looks more like a real locomotive. A 400E looks awkward to me. I run a 392E  with 200 series cars on my home layout and I think they look just fine together.

The 392E looks really good pulling the full size Blue Comet set. Lionel actually sold the set like this for 1 year. Black 392E not two-tone Blue.

I have the much discussed coal train with the stamped cars. I think the 392E Black with Brass looks better than the 318E or the 390E.

Not to get off topic but the mismatched set that is my favorite is the Ives 1134 pictured in my above photo with Ives Cadet Blue (greenish) cars. I think it looks better than the electric.

I run a full set (15 or so) 500 series freight cars with my black/brass 400E and I really like how they look together.  I kept a set of presidential chrome "comet" cars MTH made a few years ago, and I like the looks of them with the same black/brass 400E.

Overall appearance is personal preference, but to me the steam engine should be longer and taller than the string of freight cars, but same height and shorter length than passenger cars.
