I recently started running my 3rd Rail J-3 Hudson that I had upgraded to PS3 last year, pulling about 7 Golden Gate Depot ESE cars.  The drive gears got completely worn off.  Anyone on here who can source the gears and replace them?

I think a big part of the problem was that I did not clean the grease out of this old gearbox, and the gearbox lid was loose.  I was too focused on the electronics and didn't give the drive system the attention it deserved, lesson learned!

The loose gearbox cover resulted in a sloppy, incomplete mesh of the worm and worm gear, causing the extreme wear you have.  A local friend had the same issue with a 3rd Rail gearbox that he opened to lubricate.  He didn't get the cover to seat properly and wound up with extreme wear.

I'll send you an e-mail with a potential source for parts.  Mentioning it here could cause this thread to be deleted.
