E5, 6 Run 2 now up for reservations !!!! Scott has posted pix of all the Run 1 models - except the “demonstrator”. If you’ve missed run 1, you can now step up a have a second chance at these beauties. The paint schemes are the same as run 1. If you want a later paint scheme, you will Need to email Scott in sufficient numbers to have a chance of making that happen.

The Demonstrator was never a true Demonstrator anyway.  It started life as Seaboard unit that got rebuilt into an E6 partway through the 1939 world's fair.  I may need to add an E5 B unit.  Hard to decide as there are so many other great offerings right now from Sunset.

I will pre-order through Chicagoland Hobby for CB&Q E5A & E5B units.

Unless I missed it, 3RD Rail’s website did not list the specific road numbers & SILVER names for the CB&Q E5 models.



From the first run, I already have:


CB&Q   E5A   Cab          #9915A   Silver CARRIER   Nose Stripes:  BLACK

CB&Q   E5B   Booster   #9910B   Silver POWER    (B units have neither a nose nor stripes )



From the second run, I am hoping to buy:

CB&Q   E5A   Cab          #9911A   Silver PILOT        Nose Stripes:  BLACK   (Prototype preserved at Illinois Railway Museum)

CB&Q   E5A   Cab         #9910A   Silver SPEED        Nose Stripes:  RED

CB&Q   E5B   Booster   #9911B   Silver MATE       (B units have neither a nose nor stripes )



3RD Rail's website indicates that for CB&Q E5B booster units that their is a choice between BLACK stripes & RED stripes.  Because the E5B booster units did not have a cab with a nose, the E5B units had neither black nor red stripes.  I hope that 3RD Rail clarifies if there is any difference between these two choices for CB&Q E5B booster units.  

I also hope that 3RD Rail will specify on their website what road numbers & Silver names will be offered.

I for one would be in for an 1939 A-B Seaboard Worlds Fair "E4" unit!

Especially since the 9911 Silver Pilot is the ONLY surviving E5 and the only locomotive to leave scrapper Pielet Brothers as a locomotive and not as a pile of scrap metal.

A MP E6 in Jenks paint would be a fantastic add-on for my MP “empire”. No one has done it in “O” before too !!!!  Email Scott to give us the option !!!!!

(Sorry not to post a picture but I can only find photos that the website will scrub for copyright issues - can’t find a line drawing. No pix of models as no models. 😖)

I called it “demonstrator” just to keep it simple. Didn’t want to “get into the weeds”.
Anyway, Scott’s now added it to the options. 👍

Happy to see this happening. I'm putting an initial document together for Scott with regard to late era Red Nose E5s. Since the tooling was made for Phase II engines, I assume red noses will be Phase II as well. Thus, I will be recommending Phase II engine names and engine numbers ensuring more prototypically accurate models. 

E5 boosters had my differences between red and black nose timeframes. Some included: E5Bs behind Red nose engines didn't have skirts, had nameless plates, had vertical E5 plates and different markings throughout.

Notice that phases apply to E5A units only.

No, E5s were stainless throughout. A complete shroud. No partial stainless parts.

THe SF and RI approach wouldn't look good on E5s. Imagine side plated inserts with non plated skirts/ roof/ nose.

Nonetheless, that approach worked for CB&Q E9s and they sure made them accordingly.

I would like to have the truck skirts on my Run 2 E5 models to match my Run 1 E5 models.

Even though the 3RD Rail tooling is for the Phase II versions of the E5 A, I still want the following Phase I Road numbers & Silver names From Run 2:

E5 A Cab Units

#9911A Silver PILOT Black Stripes

#9910A Silver SPEED Red Stripes

E5 B Booster Units

#9911B Silver MATE (no nose so no stripes if any color)

The Burlington removed the E5 names 1952/1953 by simply flipping the nameplates over.  Red nose stripes and faux grill painting began in 1959.

Living near the Burlington racetrack in the 1960's, I don't ever recall seeing black nose stripes on the E's.

When you have the picture displayed in your browser, tap or right click (depends whether using a tablet or computer) on the url at the top and “copy” the url.  Then in the post you want to include the link, in the “add reply” box click on the [ ]-[ ] icon to the right of the italics (slanted I ) icon.  In the pop up box that opens, paste the copied url in the top box labeled “Url.”  Then in the “Text to Display” box type what you want the underlined link description to be, by default it will be the same as the url.  In the first example below, I typed “Link to picture” and clicked on the “OK” button.  In the second example, I let the text default to the url.

😑😑😑Another Campaign that is pushed out to somewhere in the future 😖😖😖 Can the 5-6 molds be modified for the differences ??? That would be extremely advantageous (less $) as fewer roads bought the 3-4s. This means smaller audience to buy and that translates to lower #s for the run.
