is there any way to determine what board in in a diesel by the number on the box? 30-2698-1 would be the one in question since its on an auction site.

You can sorta tell by going to the MTH site and looking up the # in the product locator. They usually list the first catalog it showed up in. I think if it was introed after 2005 it's 3V, before probably 5V. It is possible that engines released originally as PS2 5V could have been changed during subsequent production, but I don't know how to tell. In theory the shape of the charging port is a give away, but the seller has to show it or you take his word for it.
Since this one first appeared in 2006, I think it is safe to assume 3V.

According to the user manual, available for viewing online at the engine's MTH web page, it's a 3 volt engine.
thanks..I recently bought some atlas boxcars on the same auction site and was less than excited when they arrived and I opened the box. Good to practice something with I guess.
