445 Switch Tower tune up?

Purchased the tower at an auction, the electrical parts worked, but the switch man would not slide down the stairs. The tower was quite dirty and gummy, so I disassembled the staircase and then cleaned everything with Dawn soap. Looks like he will slide ok now. I was wondering if there were any tips for ensuring smooth operation. Any dry lubricants for plastic or other suggestions?
